About The Author: David Long
Background
I grew up as a street kid and skateboarder in Upstate New York. I had youthful ambitions to become a successful Electrical Engineer like my father (once ranked #8 in the U.S. for most patents at IBM). As I grew older however, I realized that although I had a knack for science and math, I just wasn't sufficiently motivated for the demands of an Electrical Engineering curriculum.
I quickly changed gears to pursue a business degree. After a semester though, I still wasn't devoted enough to school (at that time) to follow through. So when one of my buddies decided to move to NYC, the idea of moving and experiencing the "Big City" seemed too desirable to pass up.
So I was off to New York City. Once arriving, I realized that I needed to do something with my life and still wanted to be a successful businessman. So, after looking through the newspaper classifieds I decided to try and make it as a stockbroker. I did... passed my Series 7 on the first try and I was off. I did that for a couple years and I was pretty good at it. I made a lot of wealthy people even richer (mostly my bosses) and had a lot of wild times. Then just before I really started to "make it big", the market crashed - hard!
Education & Experience
I later went to school for business at SUNY Albany, NY. I ended up graduating with honors with a major in Marketing and a minor in Theatrical Production. That's also where I began screenwriting. Actually, it was called Playwriting because that's all they offered. I was the only Screenwriter in the class and I was also the only one to ever take that same class three times. During my education I found my two other true occupational passions; pizza delivery and bartending. My political and social views also changed drastically at this time and although I had a strong business sense, I decided that "I hate business".
A few years have gone by and I continue to pursue my passions for screenwriting, bartending and pizza delivery. I've also been taking a screenwriting class at Dutchess Community College (Poughkeepsie, NY). I've been studying under Dana Dorrity, a phenomenal teacher with a Masters in Screenwriting from AFI. I'm now planning to take that class for the 3rd time. I have also managed a local "Writing for Production and Performing Arts" group and have been a member of many other writing groups.
Screenwriting
I am a Screenwriter and not an aspiring Actor, Director or Production Assistant that got into screenwriting as an outlet to push my career. Quite simply, I'm a Screenwriter and I love it!
I think my dynamic writing style is positively influenced by the fact that I'm a Scorpio, who's Manic Depressive and left-handed. I've lived quite a wild and exciting life and had many life-altering experiences. I am capable of writing in many different genres including Drama, Sci-Fi, Psychological Thriller and Comedy.
The Industry
I take screenwriting very seriously, as I do my approach to the industry. I know that by industry standards it is considered premature to send out your first script without having a few backups when they ask "what else do you have"?
I have evolved as a Screenwriter since my first script. There is a real art to it and I've got it down solid. I don't want to be "unmarketable" or a "one hit wonder". I would like to develop a career as a Screenwriter with a working Agent. This is why I have developed a portfolio of four scripts before introducing myself to the industry, until now (02/2011). This is also why I have put time, money and effort into creating this website. I have also created pictorial images, one page pitches, and synopses for each of my scripts. I don't want to waste anyone's time... all I ask for is a fair read of one of my synopses.
